YouTuber Sameer MD Granted Bail in Dharmasthala Defamation Case

Sameer MD arrest

Mangaluru, August 21: The Mangaluru court has granted bail to YouTuber Sameer MD in connection with the defamation and incitement case related to his controversial video on Dharmasthala. The order, issued today, shields Sameer from immediate arrest after weeks of dramatic developments.

How the Case Began

Sameer MD rose to sudden online fame with a video he released about Dharmasthala. Using AI-generated narration, he made explosive claims alleging large-scale crimes, including “thousands of rapes and murders,” and urged people across Karnataka to take to the streets in protest.

The video quickly went viral, sparking anger and concern. Authorities deemed his remarks provocative and dangerous to social peace.

Suo Moto Case by Dharmasthala Police

Taking cognizance of the video, the Dharmasthala police registered a suo moto case on July 12. Sameer was charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS):

  • Section 240 – relating to defamation
  • Section 192 – spreading false information with intent to incite
  • Section 353(1)(b) – creating public nuisance and disturbing social peace

The FIR accused Sameer of attempting to provoke unrest and riots through his statements.

Police Attempt to Arrest Sameer

Following the FIR, Dharmasthala police launched efforts to arrest him. A team even reached Bengaluru, where Sameer resides in Bannerghatta. However, he reportedly fled his residence moments before the police arrived, avoiding arrest in a dramatic manner.

Bail Application and Court Order

Fearing imminent detention, Sameer approached the Dakshina Kannada District Court on August 19, filing an anticipatory bail application. The Mangaluru court heard the matter today and granted him bail, allowing him to avoid arrest in the ongoing investigation.

Sameer’s Letter to Police

After the FIR, Sameer also wrote a letter to the Belthangady Circle Inspector, stating that he could not safely appear at the Dharmasthala police station. He alleged threats and attacks against YouTubers and requested alternative arrangements such as:

  • Interrogation at a different station
  • Video conferencing for questioning
  • Police protection during his appearance

He further asked for 15 days’ time to cooperate fully with the investigation.

What Lies Ahead

While bail has provided immediate relief, Sameer MD still faces serious charges. The suo moto case continues, and police are expected to pursue the investigation into whether his video was deliberately made to disturb peace and incite unrest.

The case has triggered debates on the use of AI in digital content, freedom of expression, and responsibility of online influencers when creating potentially inflammatory material.

Conclusion

With bail granted, YouTuber Sameer MD has temporarily escaped arrest in the Dharmasthala case. However, the suo moto FIR and pending investigation mean that the legal battle is far from over. All eyes now remain on how the case unfolds and whether further action will be taken against him.
